The
holiday of Hanukah, literally meaning "dedication", signifies
an important victory in history in which the Temple in Jerusalem
was re-dedicated to the observation of Jewish ritual practices.
To
celebrate Hanukah and remember this victorious event, we
light candles on an eight branched candelabrum, called a
Menorah or Hanukkiah. Each night an additional candle is
added until on the eight night all the candles are lit.The
head candle (called the "shamash") is lit first and then
used to light the others.
